Amazon vs Flipkart vs Your Own Website: Where Should a Small Business Sell First?
By the Hymazon Digital team 2 min read
Marketplace or your own ecommerce website? Compare costs, control, customers and effort to choose the right place to start selling online in India.
The short answer
Most new sellers should start where their customers already are. For many products in India that means Amazon or Flipkart, because the buyers, the trust and the delivery network already exist. But a marketplace is rented land: the rules, the fees and the customer relationship belong to the platform. Your own website is slower to grow, but everything you build there is yours.
The right choice depends on your product, your margins and how much time you can spend on marketing. Here is how to think it through.
When a marketplace makes sense
Amazon and Flipkart are a strong first step if most of these are true for you:
- People already search for your type of product on the marketplace.
- Your margins can absorb referral fees, shipping fees and returns.
- You want orders quickly and don't have a marketing budget yet.
- You're happy to compete on price, reviews and listing quality.
When your own website makes sense
An ecommerce website (on Shopify or a custom build) pays off when:
- Your product is unique, branded or made to order, so buyers look for you, not a category.
- You want repeat customers and their contact details for offers and updates.
- Marketplace fees would eat most of your profit.
- You already have an audience on Instagram, WhatsApp or offline that you can send to the site.
Compare the real costs
On a marketplace, costs are mostly per order: a referral fee, closing and shipping fees, plus the cost of returns. Before you list, work out your profit per order after every fee using the marketplace's current fee calculator, not a rough guess.
On your own website, costs are mostly up front and fixed: design, platform subscription, payment gateway charges and, most importantly, the marketing needed to bring visitors. A website with no traffic sells nothing, so budget for ads, SEO or social media from day one.
The approach that works for most sellers
You don't have to choose forever. A common path is to start on one marketplace to prove demand and learn what sells, then launch your own website once you have reviews, photos and a few best-sellers. Use the marketplace for reach and the website for loyalty and margin.
Whichever you choose, start small: a few products, listed well, with honest numbers behind them. Expand once those sell profitably.
