SEO Basics for Small Businesses: How to Get Found on Google

A plain-English guide to SEO for small businesses: Google Business Profile, keywords, page titles, speed and reviews that help customers find you.

What SEO actually means

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the work of making your website the best answer to what your customers type into Google. There is no trick to it. Google wants to show useful, trustworthy pages that load quickly, so SEO is mostly about building exactly that and making it easy for Google to understand.

1. Set up your Google Business Profile

If you serve customers in a city or area, this is the single most valuable free step. A complete Google Business Profile puts you on Google Maps and in the local results for searches like "tailor near me".

  • Use your real business name, address and phone number, the same everywhere online.
  • Pick the most accurate main category and add your opening hours.
  • Upload real photos of your shop, products and team.
  • Ask happy customers for reviews and reply to every review, good or bad.

2. Find the words your customers use

Write down how a customer would describe what you sell, in their words, not industry jargon. Type those phrases into Google and look at the suggestions and the "People also ask" box. Those are the searches to target. A shop in Jaipur will usually do better aiming for "handmade leather bags Jaipur" than for "bags".

3. Give every page a clear title and purpose

Each important page should focus on one service or product, with a title and heading that say exactly what it is. "GST Registration in Pune | Your Business Name" tells both Google and the customer what they'll find. Write a short, honest description for each page too; it often becomes the text under your link in search results.

4. Make the site fast and mobile-friendly

Most of your visitors are on phones. Compress large images, avoid heavy pop-ups and check that buttons are easy to tap. Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool shows what is slowing your pages down.

5. Be patient and keep publishing

SEO usually takes a few months to show results, and it keeps working long after you stop paying for it, unlike ads. Adding helpful content regularly, such as guides, FAQs and project examples, gives Google more reasons to send people your way.
